WAAAAAAAGH Pyle #3
As promised I have finally managed to get some pictures of some WIP. In particular I finally constructed the Warboss on Gigantic Spider. The model is insane! It is one of the harder kits in the citadel range and took me a couple hours to build. Every joint was pinned and I even had to pin it to the base. That being said, the finished model looks amazing.
Along with this fella, I've been working on a pack of spider riders. I've included a pic of one that is nearly completed. All that's left is some final highlights and some static grass for the base.
The last pic is just to demonstrate just how big the warboss is. I would never have guessed by looking at the picture on the GW website that he was this large. I think he'll make a pretty good centerpiece model.
Let me have some feedback (specifically on the painted guy). I'll hopefully have some more up in a short while.

"Hi There,
There’s just enough time before our Open Day this weekend to fill you in with some further previews and news of what’s going on at the event. Remember, entry to the Open Day is free and it takes place this coming Sunday, the 28th of March at Warhammer World in Nottingham. Doors will open at 10am, and the event will finish at 4pm. We hope to see as many of you there for what is always one of the best shows we do in the year.
Thanks
Alan Bligh
We hope to have limited stocks of the following brand new models to purchase at the show. This is a great opportunity to get hold of these great new models, well before their standard release date.
New Tau Battlesuits!
Our first exciting preview for the weekend are three new variant XV9 Battlesuits, which you can see below, and include a new Tau Commander. These fantastic and characterful new Tau battlesuits have been designed by Daren Parrwood. Rules for the XV9 can be found in Imperial Armour Apocalypse II.
Ork Stompa Upgrades First of a new set of resin upgrades for the plastic Stompa kit, we have a titan-killing Claw Arm, a new Ork Stompa Head complete with the baleful gaze of Mork (or possibly Gork) and fighting-platform jaw, and the devastating if dangerously erratic Lifta-Droppa! These wonderfully ramshackle looking sets have been designed by Stuart Williamson, with crew by Mark Bedford. | Space Wolves Transfer Sheet We also hope to have the first examples of our new Space Wolves Transfer Sheet available for sale at the Open Day. These large (A4) full colour sheets contain the symbols for each of the Space Wolves Great Companies, allowing you to customise the Sons of Fenris in any manner you choose. The sheet has over 400 symbols, including symbols sized for Terminator shoulder pads, and extensive wolf head and claw vehicle icons. The Space Wolves Transfer Sheet has been produced by Paul Rudge. |
Imperial Armour Volume 8 Available for Pre-order! As a special offer at Open Day 2010, attendees will be the first to be able to pre-order the soon-to-be-released Imperial Armour 8 -Raid on Kastorel-Novem. Copies paid for at the show will be signed by the author, and sent without any postage charge when the book is released. | Other New Models also Available at the Show Things to do at the Show |

Hobby: Thoughts on Basing
It's your friendly neighborhood painting guy. This will be my first column on this sight and admittedly I don't have much experience with this kind of thing so bear with me. Today we are going to discuss some of the finer points of basing.
It is this humble modeler's opinion basing makes or breaks a model in it's finished state. A good base can make an average model look good and a good model look amazing. The flip side of that is a bad base can kill a models look in the same fashion. There are lots of things that you can do right and lots of things you can do wrong. I am going to discuss a few of both here.
Things not to do:
1. Do not limit the options for a base just because it is in the same army as other models with there bases already done. Repeating the same technique over and over will give a fielded army a cookie cutter look on the table top. Also having a uniform base with varied detail work on seperate units allows the army to look good on verying types of battlefields.
2. Do not over detail a base. To many things going on at one time gives the model an overdone look. This takes away from the paint job and wastes time. I'm not sure about anyone else but my hobby takes a great deal of time and wasting it not only keeps me from getting more done but also takes away from other things you may need to be doing.
3.Stay away from color coding the verticle sides of the base in order to separate different units. Having models with blue or yellow or red verticle bases makes your army look like a clown painted it when it is fielded. You can mark the bottom side of the bases with numbers or even colors in order to separate them.
Things to do:
1. More than one level to your bases will make them pop. Weather you are using green flock or sand adding static grass or some sort of stone in order to give the base a three deminsional look will bring the paint job on your models.
2. A uniform type of base is needed in order to make a completed army look good on the table top. Be careful to avoid making them all the same as we talked about before. Keep the details veried but all of your units need to look like they should be on the same battlefield.
3. Maybe the most important piece of advice I can give is the one the fewest people do when basing there models. Paint the base before you detail it. If you are using sand then paint the base beige before gluing the sand down. If its flock then paint it green and so on. This will take away the look of black or gray from showing through your basing and taking away from the work you are doing.
Next time we will dicuss how using washes can help and hurt your models look. Anyway, I hope these tips help you even if it is only a little. Until next time keep painting and basing and enjoy our great hobby. Pass it on to someone else if givin the chance.
Till next time

Chaos Space Marines: The Black Crusade
For my first article I decided to discuss my prep for this years 'Ard Boyz tournament. I have 3 trains of thought for how I'm going to get prepared for this years tournament.
1.) What's Powerful - As 'Ard Boyz has no soft scores to determine outcome and only cares about winning, it frees people up to play the lists that they wouldn't normally play. For this reason I'm expecting to see people packing armies from the newer codecies (ie. Imperial Guard, Tyranids, Blood Angels) and some powerful old favorites (Drop Pod Marines, Green Tide Orks). Of these I think I should be most prepared for large hordes of Imperial Guard, Tyranids, and Orks. These armies allow you to field massive amounts of cheap guys that can just flat overwhelm the specialty armies like mine. So how does one beat these guys? That brings me to point #2.
2.) How do I beat the best? - Beating the big guys comes down to knowing and exploiting their weaknesses. Imperial Guard loses to close combat. If you're able to get to them before the tanks blow you to bits then you can tear them apart and prevent their tanks from shooting your infantry. Tyranids can suffer if you're able to off their synapse creatures and use your long range weaponry to soften up their lines before they get to you. The same is true of Orks. Just use your guns to soften them up on their way across the table. These kind of armies HAVE to come to you if their going to win so there's no reason to make it easy for them by going out to meet them.
3.) What about the other guys? - It can't all be Nids and Orks and Guard. How does one handle the guy that shows up with Marines or Eldar? Marines hit very hard and are able to get in behind your lines with drop pods and assault marines. The same is true with an extremely fast Eldar army that get up in your lines on turns 1 and 2. This can be quite problematic if you're not ready for these kinds of things. You have to have an army that is balanced enough to handle these kinds of armies as well as getting at the big guys.
This is the army list I decided on. Lots of thanks to Chris and Carlos for the help and the ideas.

I came to this list after several weeks of research on various sites and just by listening to the buzz in the store and looking at the results of the last tournament. I wont really go into the strategy behind the list (I don't wanna give you potential opponents a leg up on me after all :) ), but I will say that I should be able to handle my own against most of the armies I'll be seeing. I feel that the only problem I'll have are in those Annihilation missions against the horde style armies.
The most glaring omission that people have pointed out to me is my lack of a Defiler in the first list. I made the decision to run dual Land Raiders over a Defiler because I felt it would be a better option to get my heavy hitters into combat as soon as possible. Khornite Terminators with Lightning Claws assaulting out of a Land Raider and led by Kharn himself could cause major havoc on enemy troops in the early going. Being able to re-deploy them by getting back into the Raider and moving to a more vital part of the battlefield could be game-breaking late in the game. I really expect these guys to wreak all kinds of death on the enemy all over the board. The same holds true for putting Toughness 5 Terminators anywhere I want them on the battlefield in the midst of enemy assault troops. This is potentially devastating.
That's all the time I have for today. Next time I'll go over converting Scout Bikers into Chaos Bikers and Assault Terminators into Chaos Terminators. Until then

Blood Angels: WIP Whirlwind
Waaaagh Pyle #2
I've had a little problem with my camera so as soon as I can I will upload some pictures of the minis I've been preparing. I've been painstakingly painting spider riders and expect my spider rider warboss to arrive tomorrow. So as soon as I can get the camera up and running I will post pictures of my WIP.
Stay tuned!

Blood Angels: First Impressions
Let me break down my impressions of the new Blood Angels as well as some new units Apocalypse-only units I used.
Vulture w/dual punisher cannons: This was the first time I got to use my flyer and I must say it was well worth it! In only two turns of action it managed to take down a greater demon and put some serious wounds on a Nurgle Biker squad. This thing is just plain badass, especially when the opposition has little in the way of dealing with flyers.
Mephiston: This guy is an absolute beast and a serious step up from his last iteration in the pdf codex. Mephiston came on in turn 2 and wiped out 7 Nurgle Terminators and put and ended up killing Tyhpus as well. The 3 psychic powers a turn are just plain brutal.
Librarian Furioso: I decided to try one of these out and it performed pretty damn well, dealing the last structure point to one of their superheavies. I definitely want to try these guys out in a regular game.
Death Company & Reclusiarch: The new DC are expensive in numbers. I ran a squad 0f 10 with a Reclusiarch and they basically made a squad of Nurgle Marines and minor demons disappear in a combo charge. I definitely want to try out some of the variations that these guys can be equipped with. It's kind of scary that you can field up to 30 DC in a single unit. The Reclusiarch granting re-rolls to hit and wound is really brutal.
Baal Predators: The scout ability for these tanks is awesome. I used my 2 Baals to effect, going after a lightly held objective held by just one Chaos Marine squad. The flamestorm cannon upgrade for Baal Predators was fairly effective too.
Hopefully we can get in a rematch game sometime soon. I really want to test the Stormraven gunships.

Sneak Peeks and New Releases
As well as previewing future projects on the Studio stand, we will have a limited quantity of some of them available for you to buy. We will reveal more just before the event, but for now we can whet your appetite with details of some of these new releases:
Raven Guard Rhino, Land Raider, and Terminator Land Raider Doors
The Raven Guard specialise in lightning attacks; demoralising raids from the shadows on the foe’s vulnerable supply lines that weaken and confuse the main strength of an enemy force. When the time is right, ebony-clad Space Marines will launch an overwhelming assault, their stark white heraldry gleaming as they slaughter the enemies of Mankind. While a Raven Guard strike force is predominantly composed of Assault Marines, heavy equipment is also used – the armoured vehicles of the Chapter are honoured relics, lovingly maintained and embellished by skilled artificers to display their battle honours and Chapter heraldry.
These vehicle upgrade sets, designed by Simon Egan, are ideal for use on all types of Space Marine tanks – each contains replacement side doors and a front hatch suitable for use on all Rhino chassis tanks such as Predators and Whirlwinds, and all Land Raider variants. Two sets of Land Raider doors are available, one featuring additional Crux Terminatus icons. Click here to view images of these doors used on different types of Space Marine vehicles.
Elysian Troops for Valkyrie
This fantastic upgrade set for the plastic Valkyrie allows you to embellish the interior of the transport with a squad of Elysian Drop troops prepping in the moments before an assault – the troopers are all highly distinctive; checking weapons, talking amongst themselves and discussing the mission over a dataslate. The set contains a full Drop Troop squad of 10 seated troopers carrying a variety of equipment, as well as lasguns mag-clamped to the roof of the Valkyrie. The detailed heads of each trooper could also be used to add variety to a standard Elysian squad with some conversion work. You can find pictures of these incredible miniatures, designed by Simon Egan and Will Hayes, here.
Elysian Tauros Assault Vehicle
The Tauros Venator is but one variant of this multi-purpose assault vehicle - the ‘standard’ 4-wheel Tauros is used by the Elysian regiments as a long-range scout vehicle, mounting potent anti-personnel firepower in the form of either a Heavy Flamer or Tauros Grenade Launcher. Its four wheels are individually powered by advanced high-yield galvanic motors, allowing it to maintain speed even with damaged tyres – often a crucial edge when faced with superior enemy firepower. This detailed model, designed by Will Hayes, is a full resin kit that comes with options for a Heavy Flamer or Grenade Launcher as well as two resin crew, designed by Simon Egan. The Tauros can be transported in either a Valkyrie Sky Talon or a standard Valkyrie, which the model will physically fit into. See pictures of the Tauros Venator here.
New Forge World Weathering Powders
Our penultimate Open Day release is a new set of our popular Weathering Powders – this new range of eight pigments compliments and expands the six powders currently available. The new powders are Aged Rust, Light Rust, Bone Dust, Faded Green, Dark Iron, Dry Mud, Fresh Mud and Medium Earth, and are available both individually and as a full set – our talented Studio designers will also be demonstrating how to work with Weathering Powders throughout the day, so make sure you stop at their stand.
Ork Runt Bot and Grot – 2010 Show Only model
This fantastic figure, designed by Mark Bedford, is our exclusive Event-Only figure for 2010. Meks are always keen to test their bionik designs on the battlefield, and if no suitable ‘patients’ are available they will build a Runt Bot; a huge, clanking parody of an Ork warrior powered by a rumbling engine and directed into battle by a plucky Grot, who will be provided with a ‘kontrol pad’ for the mechanical warrior. This finely detailed and striking vignette depicts the Grot controller perched precariously on the shoulder of the Runt Bot, wrestling with the joystick in an effort to direct the shearing claws of the monstrosity. This great miniature can be used to represent a Warboss with the Bionic Body upgrade, a Nob in Mega-Armour, or simply as a centrepiece or painting project. You can find pictures of the Runt Bot and Grot Kontroller here.
All these great kits will be available to purchase in limited numbers from our Sales stand at the Open Day – you can also place a reservation order for all these items, but as we don’t yet know what quantities we’ll have on the day we will not be able to confirm reservations until the very last few days before the show.
Attractions and Activities
As well as all the pre-release miniatures that our designers will be showing off, we will have many other fantastic displays and activities. You’ll be able to view the Forge World Studio’s Kastorel-Novem Ork board in all its glory, as our talented designers have expanded what you might have seen at Games Day UK last year.
We will also have two great participation games: Firstly, our ever-popular Warhammer 40,000-scale Aeronautica Imperialis game which will allow you to take command of either the noble Imperial Navy, a valiant Tau Air Cadre or a crack skwadrun of Ork Fightas and do battle in high-G dogfights to rack up the highest kill tally.
We will be unveiling a brand-new, giant Apocalypse participation game for this year, which sees an Adeptus Titanicus battlegroup supported by Imperial Guard tanks take on the savage might of a Goff Ork Stompa mob and their Speed Freek allies – skill, tactics and the ancient might of the Titan Legions face off against raw aggression, savagery, and the brutal genius of the Mekboyz.
Our sales stand will carry a wide range of Forge World kits, but you also can place a reservation order. This is the best way of getting exactly what you want, as we will ensure your order is packaged up and waiting for you at the Reservation point on our stand. You will be able to collect it at any point across the day, which means that you can spend more time enjoying the rest of the show – reservation orders must reach us by March 23rd.
To place a reservation, just send an e-mail to forgeworldreservations@games-workshop.co.uk including your name and a list of everything you’d like to reserve, and title your e-mail ‘Open Day Reservation’. You can also place a reservation order by telephone – just call 0115 916 8177 and a member of the Customer Service team will be pleased to assist you.
You can also bring your painted Forge World models and enter our painting competition – the model we judge as the Best in Show will win renown, honour and a unique trophy so make sure to bring your finest work.
Once again we’ll also be running our Charity Raffle – tickets are £1 each and all proceeds will be donated to Children In Need: this year the prize will be the mighty Reaver Titan. You can, as always, purchase as many tickets as you like and the draw will be made at the very end of the day – this is your chance to win a Titan for a pound!
The Warhammer World facilities will be open as normal so you can visit the store, take a look around the Citadel Miniatures Hall and admire the many jaw-dropping gaming tables created by the Scenery Team.
Food and refreshments will again be available in Bugman’s Bar throughout the day – they will even be serving a breakfast menu to start you off in the morning.
If you need directions to the event you can get them from the Warhammer World website Here, and you can find more details of the show on our website Here.
Games Day France and Salute 2010
