Apocalypse: The Assault on Darius IX

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here with some details for our upcoming Apocalypse campaign:

Game Preserve Apocalypse Campaign 2010

The Assault on Darius IX

There is only war! This summer the world of Darius IX will burn as the enemies of the Imperium gather like vultures circling prey. Located on the Eastern Fringe, close to the boundary between Imperial and Tau space, Darius IX is a major manufacturing center as well as an important stop along several trade routes. The various xenos races and traitorous forces all have their reasons for invading this Imperial world. Raise your armies and come play your part in the heroic defense or brutal destruction of Darius IX! The war is on!

This year’s Apocalypse Campaign will build upon the previous Lucky 13s campaign with veteran Apocalypse players being joined by new recruits. This campaign will differ from standard campaigns in that it will combine the standard Apocalypse format with aspects of Planetstrike and Battle Missions for a truly unique game-play experience!

Each mission in this Apocalypse campaign will feature unique scenarios with multiple mission objectives, many of which will be faction specific. One of the new features being introduced in this campaign are Factions. Generally, Apocalypse battles have featured all of the Imperial forces versus a mix of all the other 40K armies which leads to Tau, Chaos, Orks, Tyranids etc. all being on the same side which tends to make for some uneven games. To add some flavor to these games there will be multiple sides or factions involved in each battle. Along with multiple objectives, having different factions will force players to strategize more, create more exciting gameplay as there will be less player downtime (ie shorter turns), and will give individual players a greater stake in the success or failure of their faction!

For example, a battle might feature two space marine players paired with two imperial guard players as they fight off an army of Chaos Raiders (2 players) and also deal with a planetary assault by the Tau (2 players) and the threat of an Ork Waaagh!(another 2 players). The Chaos, Tau and Ork teams are all attacking Darius IX for their own reasons and thus the defending Imperial players are not facing one giant mob of enemies who wouldn’t be working together in any case, but rather 3 very different threats, each with their own agenda. There may even be other threats lurking. The attacking players are competing against both the Imperial forces and each other to secure a foothold on the planet while the Imperial forces will have to choose how and where to best defend themselves.

The battle begins July 17th!

Imperial Guard: Veteran Squad

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. Today I have some pics of my first complete Veteran Squad! These guys will be sporting the primary color scheme for my army which features rusted armor and desert-colored uniforms. I still need to go back and do the faces and give the squad a few washes, but otherwise they're ready to rock. Comments welcome!

The two meltagun specialists in the squad as denoted by their shoulder markings. Note the melta on the right which is actually a trimmed down space marine combi-melta. I needed another meltagun before a tournament and couldn't find any in my bits. This was the best part on hand and it works :)

Uncharted Seas: Mega Battle

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. Today I have some pics from our recent Uncharted Seas mega battle which featured 2 Iron Dwarfs and 1 Thaniras Elves vs Dragon Lords, Shroud Mages, and Bone Griffons! After several bloody turns the Shroud Mages team emerged victorious!

Imperial Guard: Reinforcements

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. My Imperial Guard get some more reinforcements in the form of the Imperial Strongpoint and 2 Valkyries and 2 Manticores! The strongpoint will see use in our upcoming Apocalypse campaign and is a really nice set. I'm working on a 2-story bastion and a smaller outpost sized one as well. The Valkyries will be converted into Vendettas. And the Manticores are going to be an excellent addition.

News: Mantic Newsletter - Malak Pre-Order

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. Mantic's latest newsletter is out and their new Malak miniature is up for pre-order! It looks like a fairly nice centerpiece for an undead army. There is also a corresponding army deal being offered, so if you want to amass an undead horde and not spend big money, then you might want to check that out.

Mantic Games Newsletter
The Malak pre-order deal ends this weekend

With the Revenant cavalry soon becoming a stock line and the new Dwarf range starting to come out, this is the last weekend you can pick up the Malak deal.
It has over 100 Undead models, and includes 5 metal Wraiths, 5 of the incredible Armoured Skeleton cavalry, a full set of Heroes and Necromancers, and the Undead Pegasus with Vampire Lord.
When you add in the 40 skeleton warriors, 40 armoured Skeleton Warriors, 20 Ghouls and the warmachines you have a truly massive Undead army – easily 2000 points worth, even more when you scatter a few magic items about.
With Mantic models already offering by far the best way to buy a fantasy battle army, this offer is a one off. It was a special offer to celebrate the launch of our Undead Army, so you will not see anything like it again.

So, whether you have a Vampire army that needs just a few more models (!), or intend to start a new army at a sensible price, – please get along to the site and look at the deal. It ends midnight Sunday.

Malak dies Sunday at midnight! Don't miss it.

Collectors Range

We now have available the resin Dwarf Collectors Edition, and of course his trusty pit dog.
As with all the Collectors range, the model is limited to just 75 copies (although we have not limited the dog!), so get along now to collect a piece of Mantic history.

The VIP list:

If you want to collect 1 of each resin model we do have a VIP preview list. Once you have bought any model in the Collectors range you can chose to be added to the VIP list. This gives you a chance to buy the resin casts before they go on open sale. This route is becoming increasingly popular. To add your name to the list if you are interested email here: info@manticgames.com

News: Forgeworld Newsletter #240

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. The latest Forgeworld Newsletter is out and there is more Orky goodness on the way in the form of Mekka-Dread upgrade arms! A Q&A for the new Imperial Armour is also out! Read on for more:

"Hi There,

Once again, the Ork factories of Kastorel-Novem (or MekSlag-Iks, depending on your army preference) churn forth more machinery of destruction to plague the battlefields of the far future. We also have a reminder about the forthcoming Games Days in Spain and Baltimore, for which we are still able to take reservation orders.

Thanks
Ead Brown

Ork Mekka-Dread and Arms available to pre-order now
Ork Mekka dreadThe extensively 'kustomized' walker machines are commonly fitted with multiple tool-equipped servo-arms for battlefield 'fixins' and experimental, energy-hungry weapons such as the outlandish Shunta, a compact magneto-gravitic 'traktor' gun, similar to the Lifta-Droppa, which can hurl a bubble of energy that smashes targets aside like a giant hammer. Their Big Mek pilots will delight in the destruction of enemy vehicles, using the huge saw-blade arms often seen on the Meka-Dread to strip the choicest scrap from the armoured carcass. Full background and technical information, as well as rules for fielding a Meka Dread in games of Warhammer 40,000 and Apocalypse can be found in Imperial Armour Volume Eight: Raid on Kastorel-Novem.

The Ork Meka Dread, Shunta Arm and Kil Saw are available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing June 28th. The Meka Dread is a fantastic addition to the Forge World Ork range - it boasts dizzingly fine details as you can see in the gallery of images, from the huge, extra loud engine to the smashed and battered set of viewing lenses that are used to aim the Shunta.

The Meka Dread Body is also supplied with a Big Mek pilot, holding the 'complex' Kontrol system of this unique war machine. These resin kits, designed by Phil Stutcinskas and Mark Bedford, allow you to add a complete Meka Dread to your army, and are also fully compatable with the existing Mega Dread Body, Rippa Klaw and Kil-Kannon for greater conversion potential.

Grot Tanks Update
Due to the incredible popularity of the Grot Tank Set that we announced in our last newsletter, our Production team have asked for more time to allow us to cast enough sets of these fantastic vehicles. As such, the shipping date for these tanks has been grudgingly moved to June 28th in order to ensure that we can release this kit without disappointment- we will, of course, endeavour to despatch all existing pre-orders as quickly as we can.

Imperial Armour Volume 8 Questions and Answers
Warwick has put together a question and answers page for Imperial Armour Volume 8: Raid on Kastorel-Novem. You can grab a pdf copy of it here.

Forge World Events News
Forge World will be attending Games Day Spain on July 4th, and Games Day Baltimore on August 21st. We are now taking reservation orders for both of these exciting events. Just send an email to forgeworldreservations@games-workshop.co.uk including your name and a list of everything you'd like to reserve, and title your email `Games Day Spain Reservation` or ` Games Day Baltimore Reservation`. We must receive Games Day Spain reservations by June 21st at the latest, and Games Day Baltimore reservations by July 5th at the latest.

News: GW Newsletter - Isle of Blood

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. GW just sent out their latest newsletter and it's all about the upcoming starting set for 8th ed Warhammer Fantasy! It is called Isle of Blood and will feature High Elves and Skaven locked in an epic struggle! This will also feature the small format rulebook which will be a blessing, as no one really wants to lug around the 500+ page hardcover version. What do you guys think about the choice to have High Elves and Skaven in the starter set?

The Games Workshop Newsletter 20.06.2010
In this issue: New: Warhammer Boxed Game

Incoming! The Island of Blood

The Warhammer world; it is a place riven by battle, where mighty armies clash for glory, honour or the entertainment of Dark Gods. Darkened skies, tortured by cataclysmic magics tear open and rain blood upon the ceaseless combatants and the landscape is wracked by the carnage around it. Trees writhe in mutated agony, lashing out with limb and branch and rivers flow thick with the corpses of the slain. All upon the land are consumed by the unending battle, an age of war in which victory and defeat hang in the balance.

Cast against this macabre tableau fight mighty armies -warriors by their million raise banners of defiance or icons of dismay, taking up arms in the clash for survival. Beleaguered and surrounded, the forces of Order fight desperately to stem the tide of the armies of Destruction. Delighting in the carnage and ruination, the Dark Gods look on.

The Island of Blood is but one battleground upon the face of the Warhammer world, a mystical and dangerous place that has been twisted and mutated by the warping power of Chaos. In ages past the Island of Blood was a battleground upon which armies have bled and died in the ageless battle for supremacy... and they will do so again. Soon.

The Island of Blood is the new boxed game for Warhammer and is released this September. Packed full of stunning plastic Citadel miniatures and containing all the rules, dice and templates you'll need to play, it's the essential purchase for fans of the Warhammer hobby.

Meanwhile, if you like the Battle for Skull Pass boxed game (and who wouldn't with all those Goblins and Dwarfs) then it only seems fair to point out that once the last few remaining copies are gone they're gone, and they're never coming back! Pick one up while stocks last.

In August we'll feature more information about The Island of Blood on games-workshop.com and the full details will be released in September's White Dwarf.

If you can't wait until September to get your hands on the new rules then don't forget that the new Warhammer Rulebook and complete range of accessories are available to advance order by clicking on the image below.

News: Mantic Newsletter

Hello all, Slick here. The latest Mantic Newsletter is out and there are more Dwarfs on the way! As is usual, Mantic is throwing out some awesome army deals for those looking to start the army. Read on for more information.

Mantic Games Newsletter
The Dwarfs march!

The gentle breeze ruffled the King's beard as he stood surveying the troops below him, hidden among the rocks. His Scouts has been tracking the Orc raiding party's progress for nearly a week, and the trail of mayhem and chaos had been appalling - with villages, mines and outposts all laid to waste.

War King Grafe shifted his heavy armour and tightened the straps holding it in place. He lifted his mighty hammer in his right arm and gently rested it against his shield. He knew his War Engineers had laid traps across the entrance to the valley to stop the inevitable Orc rout, and his Ironwatch were positioned above the valley with crossbows and rifles at the ready. At the valley head were his Ironbelchers, a huge array of cannons and Organ guns, and even two of the rare Fire Belchers, all primed with Cannonball and Grapeshot. The 'kicking mules' would feast today.

By Grafe's side were his King's retinue, a unit of 50 heavily armoured Ironclads, ranked 10 wide and 5 deep, the centre of the Dwarf Army. To their left and right more units of Ironclads stood, and between them units of Shield Breakers, their huge two-handed weapons at the ready...

A Dwarf army at war is truly a sight to be behold and, for the continuation of this story, you can read the rest here on the website as one of the many 'Tales from the Forge'.
Dwarf Week 3 on the blog has culminated in the latest pre-orders for the Dwarf army including the Dwarf Ironwatch, Dwarf Ironbeards and the ultimate in dwarf sets... the Dwarf Warhost! For more information of these brand new sets, including release dates, for the Dwarfs, follow this link here.

In addition, and we know that this is the set you've all been waiting for, we've put up the Dwarf Army for preorder!

With options to arm the Ironwatch with rifles or crossbows, the ability to take a mix of cannons and organ guns, and of course all of the cross-kit conversion potential, this set also includes the metal Ironbeards – a unit of Dwarf Veterans, the High King's Counsel, a Flame Belcher cannon and the Berserkers – maybe our most ambitious deal to date? We'll let you decide on that one!

This army deal will be shipping August 18th as one box – and what a box it'll be!

News: GW Newsletter - Warhammer Collector's Edition

Hello all, Slick here. The latest GW newsletter is out and has more Warhammer goodness in it. This one previews the collector's edition which looks amazing! However, it is also significantly more expensive than the regular version of the rulebook. While I like the idea of collector's editions, it is also true that the shelf life of an edition is about 4-5 years or so, and I would rather not spend any more than I have to on a book that will eventually be obsolete. What do you guys think?

40K Tournament: Imperial Guard take 1st & 2nd

View Comments
Hello all, Slick here. This past weekend I participated in a small 500pt 40K tournament at our local gaming store and came out of it with 2nd place. There were ten players in Saturday's bracket and ten in Sunday's bracket. I played in Sunday's bracket. The list I brought was:

Company HQ w/2x Flamers, 1x Autocannon team + Chimera
2x Veteran Squads w/2x Meltaguns, 1x Flamer + Chimera
2x Veteran Squads w/2x Meltaguns, 1x Flamer + Chimera
1 Hydra

All tanks had hull heavy flamers.

Our very own Inigo Montoya was also at the tournament with his guard list which ended up being virtually identical to mine and he'll likely add his own tournament summary soon.

Here is a breakdown of the rounds:

Round 1 vs Orks - My opponent was a newer player. She had a Nob squad with the warlord in a truck, a squad of Lootaz, and a large mob of slugga boyz. I won the roll to go first and the hydra blasted apart 3 Lootaz. She choose to go to ground, saving one of the Lootaz but also not being able to do anything with them on her turn. These would've been a serious threat to my tanks. One of my Chimeras also ended up wrecking the Ork trukk forcing the Nobs and Warboss to walk across the battlefield. From there on, it was a matter of mopping up the remaining Orks. She did kill the Hydra on turn six, but by then she was down to the Warboss who faced the wrath of 3 chimeras, 2 vet squads, and the company hq. Absolute massacre for me as I tabled my opponent.

Round 2 vs Death Company - This was quite an interesting choice to take in the tournament as it meant that he could not hold any objectives (in a tourney where 4 of the 6 missions were objective-based...). Turn 1 the Hydra immobilizes his DC dread and from there it was a matter of just blasting away at his main Death Company unit. They managed to reach a Chimera and blow it up but were then wiped out in the following turn leaving only the immobile dreadnaught. I spent the next 3 turns trying to bring it down and ended up blowing off both arms and finally knocking it out in turn 6 to also table this opponent. Both myself and Inigo were 2-0 with two massacres heading into round 3.

Round 3 - vs Imperial Guard - The two 2-0 armies square off in an epic battle! This scenario had some interesting night fighting rules which basically meant the guard were BS2 for the first few turns. Casualties were heavy on both sides as the battle shifted from long range shots to brutal close quarters combat once night fighting kicked in and the remains of both armies moved to secure the central objective. After 5 fast and brutal turns the game ended in a draw. The objective was literally surrounded by wrecked tanks and a squad from each army contesting the objective.

Round 4 - vs Tau - This was another objective mission with some kill point rules worked in. I won the role for deployment and took a heavily wooded area behind the central hill while forcing my opponent to deploy in the table quarter that only had a couple of trees for cover. The night fighting rules were in effect for the entire battle. With some select use of searchlights I started blasting away at his two firewarrior squads, eventually panicking both over the first 3 turns. I also put a few wounds on his battlesuits. A rush to the objective also let me get 3 flamers on his Kroot squad, which wiped them out. He did manage to blow up a chimera and half a vet squad with his HQ. The vets got revenge by moving up and blasting his HQ with some meltas. Another massacre put me to 3-1.

Round 5 - vs Tyranids - This was another objective mission and actually required a unit to carry the objectives around with them. Units could not carry them in vehicles so it would mean getting out of the Chimeras once the area was secure. My opponent won the roll for deployment and deployed in a corner with a lot of cover. I deployed my Hydra on top of a hill which afforded my unobstructed sight to his units and my Chimeras formed a line across two of the paths between rocky hills. Turn one saw his warriors grab an objective and then he ran for cover with it (and would essentially castle the whole game). The Chimeras move up and engage his warrior squad. The Hydra also added some support and I managed to down 2 warriors! He had no shots to take as his list had nothing to deal with armor 12. Turn two saw another warrior fall and his prime take a wound as well. My company hq also hopped out onto an objective and moved into cover. Turn 3 saw his genestealers come in and explode the Hydra which resulted in 3 genestealers getting caught in the explosion! My turn 3 saw both vet squads dismount and move up to deal with the genestealers. 1st rank, 2nd rank fire, some flamers, and the autocannon team saw the genestealers wiped out. The Chimeras poured fire into his biovores, dropping one. By turn 5 I had moved the vet squads to grab two more objectives and then hide behind cover. Fire from the chimeras finally brought him down to just 1 warrior and the prime. He decided to concede as it was 3-1 on objectives and he had no hope of taking them from me. Another massacre for me.

Round 6 - Tyranids - Final game. The scenario involved kill points with the main objective being to get as many as your units off the board as possible. My opponent won setup and took a multi-level hill with some good cover. I took a smaller hill in the opposite corner with a few trees around the area. I managed to seize the initiative and moved my chimeras up the flank and then engaged his genestealers with everything that could see them, dropping about half the squad. He decided to start moving his warriors up the opposite flank, not bothering to shoot, running for the table edge instead. A few more turns of this saw the genestealers wiped out and his warriors down the last. On the final turn I moved my company hq and vet squad off of his board edge in to get over half my army off securely. I had to leave the hydra on unfortunately to deal with his last warrior who came up short on the previous turn, missing my board edge by an inch. The hydra took care of business and he was tabled. Unfortunately he rolled a one and the game ended, otherwise I would've made the attempt to drive off the board with the hydra as well.

Final tournament result 5 wins, 0 losses, 1 draw which was the same as Inigo, although he ended up 1 point ahead of me. He had 107/120 points possible and I had 106/120. I ended up getting a Manticore for my prize which was pretty sweet :)
